V.W. Brother Harvey Dean Painter (1918 - 2012) was Initiated in Temple Lodge, No. 33 in 1946. He served as Junior Warden (1953), Senior Warden (1954) and Worshipful Master (1955).

On 11 April 2015, V.W. Brother Harvey Dean Painter's Past Master's Jewel was presented to W.B. Mark Anderson (Worshipful Master of Temple Lodge, No. 33 - 2013-2015) who will wear it as his Past Master's Jewel.

Here is some information about V.W. Harvey Dean Painter taken from Temple Lodge No. 33 records:

"…..A Petition for Initiation was received from Mr. Harvey Dean Painter, Duncan, B.C., Lumber Grader, born at Athabasca, Alta. June 17th 1918, recommended by W. Bro. F.G. Driver and W. Bro. R.J. Mason. Bro. J.S. Dyke moved and Bro. John Homer seconded that the petition be received and an investigating committee appointed. Carried. On this committee were appointed W. Bro. C.W. O’Neill, Bro. J. Homer and Bro. D.F. Hammond……”

[Note: At the same meeting a Petition for Initiation was also received from Mr. Frank Gavin Hume]

“…..The report of the Investigating Committee on [the] petition of Mr. Frank Gavin Hume being favourable, W. Bro. Dwyer moved and Bro. Waldie seconded that the report be received the committee discharged and the candidate balloted for. Carried.


The ballot being spread was found fair, clear, bright and unspotted and the Wor. Master therefore declared Mr. Frank Gavin Hume duly elected to become a member of Temple Lodge by Degrees.


The report of the Investigating Committee of Mr. Harvey Dean Painter being favourable, Bro. K.H. Castley moved and Bro. A.A. Atkinson seconded that the report be received the committee discharged and the candidate balloted for. Carried.


The ballot being spread was found fair, clear, bright and unspotted and the Wor. Master declared Mr. Harvey Dean Painter duly elected to become a member of Temple Lodge by Degrees….”


Temple Lodge No.33 Minute Book, Regular Meeting of Tuesday, 11 June 1946

“….W. Bro. Driver introduced W. Bro. Ardley of Hiram Lodge, No.14, A.F. & A.M., B.C.R., on his first visit to Temple Lodge……


The M. Masons lodge was called to refreshment and a lodge of Entered Apprentices opened and David James Madill, Frank Gavin Hume and Harvey Dean Painter were admitted, obligated and brought to Light and taught their first step in Masonry. The work being exemplified in a dignified and impressive manner.


The W. Master then thanked the Brethren for attending this Emergent meeting which was held under very unfavourable weather conditions. At 9:30 the E.A. lodge was closed………..”


Temple Lodge No. 33 Minute Book, Emergent Meeting of Tuesday, 23 July 1946

“….The Master Masons lodge was called to refreshment and a lodge of Entered Apprentices opened when Bro. Harvey Dean Painter was examined in his work as an Entered Apprentice by his coach Bro. G.W. Norris. Bro. Painter having passed a good examination W. Bro. McEwan moved and W. Bro. Driver seconded that he be passed to the more Honourable Degree of a Fellow Craft Mason. Carried.


The Entered Apprentice lodge as closed and a Fellow Craft Lodge opened. Bro. Harvey Dean Painter was admitted, obligated, and taught his second step in Masonry. The work was well done.


The Fellow Craft lodge was closed and labour resumed in the Master Mason degree at 10:50 p.m.…..
The labours of the evening being ended the Lodge as closed at 10:55 p.m. Peace and harmony prevailing…..”


Temple Lodge Minute Book, Regular Meeting of Tuesday, 10 September 1946

 

“….The Master Masons lodge was called from labour to refreshment and a Fellow Craft lodge opened. Bro. H.D. Painter was examined in the Fellow Craft degree work by Bro. G.W. Norris. Bro. Painter having passed an excellent examination W. Bro. R.K. Cairns moved and Bro. Waldie seconded that he be raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. Carried.


W. Bro. W.M. Dwyer introduced Bro. Arthur Machau, of Yancey C. Bablock Lodge, No. 265, G.L. of Washington, to the W.M. and members, who was paying a visit to Temple Lodge…..


The F.C. lodge as closed and after a short recess the Master Masons Lodge was called to Labour at 8:45 p.m. The W. Master then called upon W. Bro. R.J. Mason to confer the Master Mason’s Degree on Bro. H.D. Painter. Bro. Painter was admitted, obligated, brought to Light and raised to the Sublime degree of a Master Mason. The work being exemplified in a most exemplary manner……..
The labours of the evening being ended the Lodge as closed at 10:55 p.m. Peace and harmony prevailing…..”
