SUGGESTED READING and RESEARCH ON FREEMASONS and FREEMASONRY

(For Our Recommended Books on Local History, Click Here.)

There are many books and documentaries available on Freemasonry. Some are excellent while many are a complete waste of time and are not worth the paper they are printed on.

To help readers avoid some of the books in the latter category, here is a list of some of the better books and documentaries on Freemasonry and Freemasons which Temple Lodge, No.33 members think may be of interest to Freemasons, potential candidates for Freemasonry or others interested in the Craft. We will be adding more titles in due time.

We encourage local buyers to patronize Duncan, B.C. bookstores like Volume One Books and Gallowglass Books. For those outside the Duncan, B.C. area, we have included links to Amazon.com, Amazon.ca and other worldwide Amazon sites. For out of print books, we recommend AbeBooks.com as a useful source.

Here are our current book and documentary recommendations:

Living The Enlightenment: Freemasonry and Politics in Eighteenth Century Europe by Margaret C. Jacob

Margaret Jacob is an academic historian. This is the only book we are aware of which traces the influence of Freemasons and Freemasonry on the development of modern political theory and political institutions in the eighteenth century. A very interesting book. But it's a bit pricey and if the publishers are reading this, we recommend they drop the price a bit (actually, a lot). We suggest more readers would buy it at a lower price.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR

Many writers have tried to connect Freemasonry with the Knights Templar. Please note that this is a theoretical and speculative connection and Craft Freemasonry claims no connection to the Knights Templar. Here are some book recommendations for those who wish to pursue this theory (emphasis on "theory") further.

Born In Blood: The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry by John J. Robinson

This well written book puts forward a theory (emphasis on "a theory") that Freemasonry originated with the Knights Templar following the suppression of the Knights Templar in 1307. John Robinson became a Freemason after he wrote this book.

It's a very thought provoking book but our primary criticism is that it has no footnotes (at least the copy we have doesn't). That means readers must do their own research from scratch to confirm or refute issues that Robinson raises.
