JAMES BOSWELL

James Boswell

Portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds

James Boswell (1740-1795) is best known for his biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson, one of the classic works of English literature. It is considered one of the most important biographies ever written, not only for its subject but also its importance in the development of modern biography.

He also wrote travel books, including a collaboration with Samuel Johnson entitled The Journey To The Western Islands of Scotland and Journal of a Tour To the Hebrides,

James Boswell was the Master of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning, No.2 in Edinburgh. Other Lodge Canongate Kilwinning members at the time included Robbie Burns, the 11th Earl of Eglinton, the 8th Lord Napier and many other notable figures in Scottish history. A well known painting of a meeting of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning shows Boswell, Burns and many others. James Boswell was made an honourary member of Edinburgh Lodge and served as Deputy Grand Master of Scotland.
