INTERESTING MASONIC CONNECTIONS

Meridian, Mississippi

During travels or research we often come across interesting connections to Freemasons and Freemasonry.

W.B. Mark Anderson came across the Temple Theater in Meridian, Mississippi during a trip to the south eastern U.S. in 2014.

The Temple Theater at 8th Street and 24th Avenue in downtown Meridian.

This theater was built by the Hamasa Shriners between 1923-1927. At the time it was built, it had one of the largest stage facilities in the U.S.

As far as we are aware, the Temple Theater is still owned by the Hamasa Shrine and funds raised from the theater go to Shrine charities.

Jimmie Rodgers performed here during his short career (1927-33) and his funeral was held at the Temple Theater in 1933.

The State of Mississippi Department of Archives and History maintains a series of markers at historic sites throughout the state.

One of these Mississippi Department of Archives and Historymarkers has been placed outside the Temple Theater, and reads:

"TEMPLE THEATER - Erected 1923-27 by the Hamasa Shriners in Moorish Revival style. This theater was among the finest movie/vaudeville "palaces" of its day, having one of the largest stage facilities in the United States."

Ralph Peer and the Making of Popular Roots Music by Barry Mazor

Ralph Peer produced and published Jimmie Rodgers throughout Rodgers' recording career. This book has a lot of interesting information on Jimmie Rodgers as well as being a great book about the music end of the music business.
