INTERESTING MASONIC CONNECTIONS

Howlin' Wolf

Howlin' Wolf (real name Chester Arthur Burnett) was/is one of the major figures in blues history.

He was a Freemason (although we don't know his Lodge affiliation or Masonic history at this time). His Masonic ring is visible in the album cover photo at left.

Howlin' Wolf was born near West Point, Mississippi. He started playing guitar at an early age and was apparently taught by blues legend Charley Patton, when both Howlin' Wolf and Patton were living around Dockery Farm near Drew, Mississippi.

Howlin' Wolf became a professional musician in the late 1920s but was not recorded until 1951, when he made his first recordings for Sam Phillips at the Memphis Recording Service, later Sun Studios, in Memphis, Tennessee.

He recorded primarily for Chess Records in Chicago for the rest of his career.

The State of Mississippi is commemorating its rich misical heritage with a series of markers collectively called the Mississippi Blues Trail.

The Mississippi Blues Trail marker honouring Howlin' Wolf is in West Point, Mississippi.

See our Music By Masons page on Howlin' Wolf.
