OLD FIRE HOUSE

40 Ingram Street, Duncan, B.C.

Fig. 1 Old Fire House, 40 Ingram St., Duncan

This building was designed and built in 1923 by Victoria architect Douglas James for the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department. Douglas James also designed the building at 45 Craig Street for W.B. Harold Fairfax Prevost in 1923.

We are not sure whether Douglas James was a Freemason. His brother, the Victoria architect Percy Leonard James, was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge, No. 49 in Victoria.

Along with the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department, this building originally contained facilities for the local police, including a court room and jail cells.

Members of Temple Lodge, No. 33 were instrumental in creating the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department. W.Bros. Kenneth Duncan and Andrew H. Peterson were Charter Members. W. Bro. Andrew H. Peterson was the first chief of the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department. Other early Duncan Volunteer Fire Department members from Temple Lodge included Harry Smith and George Almon Harris.

Other Temple Lodge, No.33 members who served in the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department at the time this building served as the Fire Hall included MW Bro. Claude Green,

The Old Fire House is now home to The Old Firehouse Wine Bar, which is on our list of Recommended Businesses for Brethren who are Visiting Temple Lodge.
