Here is a brief biographical sketch of Brother David Plaskett taken from his obituary in the Cowichan Leader newspaper:
Plaskett – A pioneer merchant of the Island, Mr. David Plaskett, aged 75, died at his home on Coronation Avenue on Sunday morning. He had been a resident of Duncan for the past 45 years, coming here from Ladysmith in 1906.
Born in Workington, Cumberland, England, in 1876, Mr. Plaskett came to Nanaimo direct from England in 1896, and was engaged as a butcher. He later opened the first butcher shop in Alberni, which he sold in 1907. He built and operated in Duncan his own butcher store. This stood where Model Meat Market now stands. In 1911 he sold this business and returned to England for a holiday.

On his return to Duncan he engaged in several businesses including two bakeshops before returning to his trade as a butcher, which he carried on until his retirement in 1949. He was a member of Temple Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 33, Duncan.
Surviving are his wife, Naomi; one son, Eli Hodgson; one brother, Eli, Duncan; one brother and one sister in England; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A cousin, Mr. Joseph Plaskett and another, Mrs. James Evans of Koksilah also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Hirst Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Canon H.T. Archbold followed by interment in St. Mary’s churchyard, Somenos. [note: this is incorrect. Brother Plaskett is buried in Mountain View Cemetery] ”
